My Favorite Places: Lewes, DE and Venice, Italy

Lewes, DE
One of my favorite places to be is the town of Lewes, DE. I have family who lives there and so, when I was a child, my family drove to Delaware most summers to visit. In Lewes, there is a house that belonged to my great-grandparents that we stayed at. The town has a large canal and is on the ocean. It is small but has a lot of local shops that make it fun to walk around the main streets. The city also has a hand operated turning train bridge and a drawbridge over the canal. I loved going out when the horn sounded to watch it raise and lower to allow boats to go through. There is also a state park called Cape Henlopen, where a ferry runs to New Jersey a few times a day. There is a bay where you can find horseshoe crabs and periwinkles and seashells.

Here is a picture of the lighthouse at Cape Henlopen which my mother took:

And here is a photo looking down the canal from the drawbridge:

Venice, Italy
Another of my favorite places is Venice, Italy. I studied abroad last summer and went to Venice during a free weekend. I found a boat to stay on through Airbnb and spent two days exploring the main island and some surrounding islands. My favorite places to see were St. Mark's square, and the islands of Murano and Burano where there are many glassmaking and lacemaking shops.

Here are some photos I took while I was there:

  1. I will confess that I do not know any legends about Lewes, Delaware, Elyse... but about Venice: oh, there are legends! Maybe you will even want to do a Venice-inspired project for this class. Or a project telling the stories of paintings by one of the famous painters of Venice, like Titian , for example. He did some amazing paintings on religious and mythological subjects, like this one of Bacchus and Ariadne: so beautiful! :-)

Introduction to a future Accountant (sounds fun right?)

My name is Elyse, and I am working toward a double major, Accounting and Finance. Last summer, I went with the business college to Italy to study abroad. While I was there, I took Cost Accounting, which has been my favorite class so far. It may sound boring at first, however, we partnered with a winery to create an extensive financial report, detailing the specifics of how their business has been doing and offering suggestions on how to improve. In a real-world context, Cost Accounting becomes highly enjoyable to someone who likes working with numbers and has an analytical mind. Especially when you are sitting on a mountain, drinking wine, and touring a beautiful vineyard! Next summer, I am going to be interning at Koch Industries up in Wichita. It is only over the summer, however, I hope that it will give me experience I can use in the future, as well as help me to discover exactly what kind of a job I want when I graduate. One thing people like to know about me is my travel exp...

Week 7: The Voyages of Sinbad: Space Captain

After becoming a captain of my own ship, I took off from earth and quickly left the atmosphere, piloting my ship on a well-known trading route to various planets which were friendly toward earth and toward exchange. We carried with us all sorts of things, that though common to us, were novelties where we were going. Everything was fine until the ship stalled. The maintenance workers were sure they could fix it but in the meantime, as we were passing a small planet which appeared to be uninhabited, I gave permission to send a small ship down so the crew could look about.  I joined them and fairly soon we were down on the rocky surface of the planet. We hadn't gotten far when the ground beneath us jolted and we were thrown off our feet. There was another shudder and I realized we were not standing on a planet but on a giant monster! I even glimpsed its head before it lurched again.  Several of the crew members were launched off the monster's back; the rest ...
